Attempted to find Gorgonian Rock (or whatever it is we called it ;-) out by Bluefish Wall. We didn't find the gorgonians, but we did find a large (25 m) wall covered in corynactus. We probably hovered in that one spot for 15 minutes taking in the wall, the surrounding landscape, and the fish overhead. The visibility was steller (20+ m). We could see ripples on the surface from the bottom (33 m). Saw a sheepshead which looked a lot like Victor, but he would have been pretty far from home. Dodged a hailstorm of jellies on the safety stop (ID help: they looked just like egg-yolk jellies but the oral arms were white instead of yellow/orange). This was the "Return the fin I found this summer to Nancy" dive. And what a day! The forecast was for rain and unsettled seas, but we had sun, flat seas, and wonderful viz! 15-20 meters at Cannery and Granite Point Walls. Good deeds are rewarded. There was pretty good surge, however, and the winds did pick up in the afternoon as forecast with some sprinkles, but these didn't dampen the great conditions. The anchorage is in a sand channel to the east of the top of the rock at about 32 m (105 ft) (N 36 31.460, W 121 56.540) while the top of the pinnacle is about 22 m (72 ft) (maybe N 36 31.460, W 121 56.570). Visually, the anchorage is 200 degrees from the horn on Guillemot Rock and 120 degrees from the outermost rock at Cannery Point. Swim down to the anchor and swim southwest to the rock (possibly around a smaller rock). |

Then headed southeast towards the wash rock for some neat terrain. Saw a white sea cucumber XXX large cowry, dungeness, my first swimming ling cod, an anenome eating a starfish, lots and lots of corynactus and hydrocoral (and staghorn bryozoans) on this dive. The kelp forest and reef in front of the Aquarium is absolutely magic. Tons of metridiums were feeding. Also seen were a huge ling, chestnut cowries, Hermissenda, Spanish shawl, sea hare, a couple of fair sized abalone, some large rockfish guarding a 5 m salp. There was also a large school of something I hadn't seen before: it was the shape and size of a surf perch, but it was completely silver. On the first dive, we swam to the reef underwater to and fro. Met Scott Brown in line who gave Lori refresher yesterday and Phil Sammet who talked about the process of planning the dive of the wrecked barge which made the front page of the Chronicle this week.
