The Ceylon Brewery is in Sri Lanka.
This is one of the beers on Michael Jackson's beer tour.
You remember the girl in the commercial who said, "It tastes like purple." Well, this beer tastes like brown. In a good way. The dark malt characteristic is strong. The nose is dry and dusty, although there is a hint of malty sweetness to balance. The dryness is undoubtedly helped by the hops, but one can't pick out the hop individually.
The beer is very dark. Black. Reflecting off the bottom of the glass one can see dark red colors. Very beautiful. The head is lighter than one would expect in this style, but the bubbles are tiny and the foam has a thick, brown consistency as one would expect. There just isn't that much of it.
It is well conditioned. The mouth fills with foam on contact. Nutty, perfectly balanced. Not too sweet, not too bitter. A delicious stout. The body is lighter than one would expect from such a strong (8% alcohol by volume) stout. The finish is long and dry, and brings out the toasted grains.
The judges give this a 41, Excellent.
