Miscellaneous Photos—2011

This page contains a collection of miscellaneous photos shot throughout the year.

Ice skating (Sunday, 2011-01-30)

In January, we attended Aaron & Amanda's B'nai Mitzvah in Connecticut. The post-ceremony entertainment for the evening including ice skating. Believe it it or not, this was the first I ice skated in my life. I did not suffer any broken bones, contusions, or other damage caused by dates with the ice. I was, however, sore for days.

New office (Sunday, 2011-03-17)

Finally, Forrest and I were able to leave the call center we called The Dungeon. We were well compenstated for our time served there by being given an office with a view to the runway. I thought to myself at the time that getting such a nice office could only mean trouble down the road.

Around Ames

Here are a few shots from around Ames during the year.

For more information about the Green Challenge, please see the This Week@NASA video for that week starting at XX:XXX. Oh, and President Obama visited that week too, but I didn't see him there. He's in the same video starting at XX:XXX.

Neil deGrasse Tyson came to visit the Kepler folks. In addition to the photo below, Neil's visit is also covered in a segment of This Week@NASA starting at XX:XXX.

Finally, I appeared in the PBS Newshour! You can see me in the newscast at XX:XXX.

SOFIA Line Ops (Tuesday, 2011-10-11)

I was laid off from Kepler, but was fortunate enough to land a position with the SOFIA mission at Ames, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared. The observatory is a highly modified Boing 747-SP with a 2 meter telescope mounted in the rear of the aircraft. It flies at 45,000 feet to get above the water vapor which interferes with infrared observing.

Here are some shots from my first Line Operations, or Line Ops, where the instruments are tested on the ground.

Odds and Ends

Here are a couple of photographs that defy categorization.
